What is the red circle on the display?
The color of the degree symbol (on the display panel) changes from white to red to indicate that it’s time to wash/change your filters. When you’re done, just hold down the filter button on the unit for 5 seconds until it beeps and resets.
To learn more about cleaning and replacing your filters, visit:

Does the Windmill AC come with a warranty?
Yes! Your AC comes with a limited one-year warranty.
If you want, you can add an extended warranty through our warranty partner, Mulberry, in cart.
How do I clean and replace the filters?
In order to improve the quality of your air and ensure your AC doesn’t break, it’s important to regularly wash the reusable filter, as well as change your activated carbon filter every ~3 months (depending on use). The color of the degree symbol (on the display panel) changes from white to red to indicate that it’s time to wash/change your filters. When you’re done, just hold down the filter button on the unit for 5 seconds until it beeps and resets.
How do I install the AC in a storm window?
Installing the AC with storm windows requires a little prep on your end. The key is raising the unit in the front so you can maintain the correct pitch and properly clear the storm window frame/lip in the back (since the unit needs to tilt slightly downwards for proper drainage). To achieve this, other customers have used a ~1x2 inch ply wood bumper underneath the front of the unit to raise it up. Of course, the thickness will depend on your window situation and how much the storm windows are raised in the back. Again, the most important thing is making sure the unit tilts about 1° downward for proper drainage.
I can't find the installation guide and owner's manual. Where are the links?
Please read both the installation guide and owner's guide before installing and using your AC:
What are activated carbon filter auto-refills?
The air quality in your home is really important for your comfort and health. Our AC comes with an antimicrobial-protected mesh filter that helps trap dust and larger air particles, which is washable and reusable. We also offer an activated carbon filter that helps remove gases, odors, smoke, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from your air, which needs to be replaced regularly.
With our activated carbon filter auto-refills, we'll deliver a pack of 4 carbon filters right to your door and send you email reminders every few months, so you don't have to think about replacing them. And, it's only $4 per month (billed annually at $48).
How to use Alexa to control your Windmill AC?
You can control your AC with your voice using Alexa. Please use the following commands:
Turn on AC: “Alexa, turn on [AC name].” E.g.: “Alexa, turn on living room AC.”
Change temperature: “Alexa, change [AC name] temperature to [degrees].” E.g.: “Alexa, change living room AC temperature to 72 degrees.”
Change mode: “Alexa, change [AC name] to [cool/eco/fan] mode.” E.g.: “Alexa, change living room AC to Cool mode.” (Note: when you choose Fan mode, Alexa may say that the AC is not responding even though the mode changes correctly.)
Turn off AC: “Alexa, turn off [AC name].” E.g.: “Alexa, turn off living room AC.”
You don’t need a smart speaker or smart home hub like an Amazon Echo to use Alexa voice commands. You can use the Alexa app itself: with the app open, either say “Alexa” or tap on the blue button in the lower right, and then say your command.
Things to know
If you change the AC’s name in Alexa, the name will not update in the Windmill app. This is how Alexa is designed.
When you choose Fan mode, Alexa may say that the AC is not responding even though the mode changes correctly.
There is currently no way to access the AC controls through the Alexa app, even though voice control works. Please use the Windmill app to access the AC controls on your phone.
Do I need a support bracket?
Some landlords and buildings in New York City require a support bracket to be used during installation. Please ask your super or landlord if you are uncertain of their requirements. If you do need a bracket or a professional installation in New York City, please reach out to support@windmillair.com.
We've also partnered with TaskRabbit nationwide for extra installation help. Taskers can purchase and install a bracket for you before securing your AC in the window. Check out windmillair.com/pages/task-rabbit to book your Tasker and learn more.
The Windmill AC works with standard, single-arm support brackets. We recommend this one (below) on Amazon (if it's not available, any similar single-arm support bracket up to 85 lbs should work):
Can I control the Windmill AC remotely?
Yes! Our app, for iPhone and Android, allows you to control your AC from wherever you are. You can turn it on 10 minutes before getting home or shut it off in case you forget (better for your energy bill and the planet).
How do I clean and maintain my AC?
We want your unit staying fresh and clean.
WARNING: Turn off and unplug the AC before you clean it. Do not clean the inside of the AC unit. Only authorized personnel can clean the interior of the product.
Cleaning instructions and notes:
- You can clean the exterior parts of your AC with warm water and mild liquid dishwashing detergent. Use a soft wash cloth.
- Use a dryer part of the cloth to wipe down the display and buttons. Be careful not to get water or detergent near the display or buttons.
- Do not use harsh cleaning products.
- Clean your re-suable filter using warm water under the sink. Your unit will stop working if you do not regularly clean your filters.
Storage notes:
- Remove the AC carefully from the window following the Installation Guide’s instructions.
- Store it in the original packaging or use a plastic cover or bag.
- Do not store the unit where it can be punctured or damaged.
- Do not store in a room with any open flame appliances (i.e. furnaces, gas water heaters, etc.).
- Do not store in a room with electrical heaters.
- Do not store if the unit is damaged. Fix the unit before storing.

How do I register my AC for the included warranty?
If you bought through our website, you're all set (no need to register!). If you purchased your AC through one of our retail partners, you can register your AC for the included warranty here:
I'm having trouble installing the cosmetic side panels. What do I do?
We've designed the side panels to fit snugly into the front frame to insulate well and prevent air gaps. Follow the instructions and diagrams as laid out in the installation guide.
Here's a helpful video:
https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/450889383/88ca42390e
Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to give the foam panels some force when inserting into the front frame channel. When it’s in the channel, you can insert the prongs into the slots. Once you get the prongs into the slots, the panel should flatten out nicely.
Where is your end user agreement for the app?
You can find the user agreement for our mobile app here.

Orders
Do I need to pay taxes on my order?
Sales tax is required by law and collected in certain states. You’ll see the exact amount on your order after entering your address information on the checkout page.
How can I track my order?
Once a product has shipped, you'll receive a FedEx tracking number to monitor your order’s whereabouts. You can use this tracking number to get updates here.
Please note, your tracking number will not work until FedEx scans your order into their system (please give it 24-48 hours if the tracking number does not immediately register).
Can I cancel an order after it's been placed?
We know plans change. You can cancel an order up until receiving your shipping confirmation email. If your order has already been shipped, email us at support@windmillair.com to set up a return.
I placed my order but didn't receive my confirmation email. What do I do?
If you haven't received a confirmation within a few hours of placing your order, check your Spam or Junk folders, or reach out to us at support@windmillair.com. You can also chat us at support.windmillair.com!
Shipping & Returns
Where does Windmill ship?
We currently ship to 48 U.S. states. (Sorry, Alaska and Hawaii — we hope to keep you cool soon). We know home comfort knows no bounds, so DM us on Instagram @windmillair or send us an email to let us know where we should land next.
What is your return policy?
We're pretty sure you'll love your new AC, but if for whatever reason you don't, we have a free 30-day, no-questions-asked return policy for customers that bought directly with us. Just email us at support@windmillair.com, and we'll give you return instructions and send you a pre-paid shipping label.
Please reach out to the retailer you purchased from if you need to return to a third party.
How much does shipping cost?
We charge $28 for FedEx Ground on all U.S. orders (we only ship within the contiguous U.S.). The shipping charge only partially offsets our costs and helps us provide you quick, reliable shipping!
Do you deliver on Saturdays and Sundays?
For standard delivery, your order will ship out the next business day (in most scenarios). It then takes 2-5 days (depending on your location) to be delivered by FedEx. Please note, if you place your order on a Friday, it likely will not ship out until the following business day (Monday).
In order to get your order on Sunday, we recommend having your packages delivered to a nearby FedEx store or friend's house before the weekend. That way, you can pick it up whenever is best for you!
Environment
Is the Windmill AC more eco-friendly?
We built Windmill with the environment in mind. Here is what we are doing to lessen our impact:
Responsible refrigerant: We decided to use a refrigerant (R32) with 68% less global warming potential than what’s commonly used (410a).
App-enabled: With our app, for iPhone and Android, you can shut your AC off remotely in case you forget (helping your energy bill and the planet).
Carbon offsets: We've partnered with EcoCart to help offset your AC's carbon footprint.
Eco Rewards: Enroll from the app and we'll reduce your AC's power at times of peak demand, to make your air cleaner and your electric grid more reliable. Earn up to $60 in rewards per year per AC.
Old unit recycling: Refrigerant leaking into landfills is one of the leading causes of global warming. Through our partnership with Earth911, we help you find a nearby recycling facility. Click here to start recycling and get $50 off your Windmill AC.
Ultra-efficient ACs: Our WhisperTech ACs are among the most efficient in the world. A variable-speed compressor saves energy while maintaining room temperature. New vents on the bottom allow for more air intake and better performance. And a nearly silent linear fan delivers smooth and efficient airflow.
How can I use my AC more efficiently and save on my energy bill?
There are several things you can do to ensure you're using your AC most efficiently:
Clean your filter: A clean filter allows more air to flow through the AC, making it more energy efficient.
Maximize air flow: For ACs, free flowing air is like food. For them to “eat” and operate as efficiently as possible, they need air to pass through without being blocked. Make sure there is nothing blocking the air flow around your Windmill AC, on the inside and outside of your home.
Give your AC some shade: Your unit will be happier and work more efficiently if you place it in a window that doesn’t get a lot of sun.
Insulate the window: Make sure there are no air gaps in your windows or walls, so cool air can’t escape (and warm air can’t get in).Do the little things: Run appliances that generate a lot of heat (washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc.) during cooler parts of the day and keep blinds closed (in your other windows) during the sunniest parts of the day.
Use the app: Let's face it, sometimes we forget to turn off the AC when we leave home. With our app, for iPhone and Android, you can shut it off remotely and save energy.
Sign up for Eco Rewards: Enroll from the app and we'll reduce your AC's power at times of peak demand, to make your air cleaner and your electric grid more reliable. Earn up to $60 in rewards per year per AC.
How does the carbon offset program work?
We've partnered with EcoCart, an organization that uses carbon offsets to combat climate change. EcoCart supports projects around the world that reduce or eliminate carbon emissions, like protecting forests or helping communities use less fuel. Their work also directly involves vulnerable communities, for local as well as global impact. EcoCart’s projects comply with best-in-class standards like the Verified Carbon Standard and Gold Standard.
Using advanced technology, EcoCart verifies that Windmill's contributions create enough impact to offset the carbon emissions from the manufacture and shipping of every AC we sell.
We know this is only one way to help fight climate change, and we are committed to doing more as we grow and our footprint expands.
What is R32?
R32 is a refrigerant with 68% less global warming potential than what’s commonly used (410a). It is a responsible choice for any AC manufacturer, and luckily for the planet, R32 is being used in more and more ACs on the market.
What if I need to reset my utility login to sign up for Eco Rewards?
To sign up for Eco Rewards in New York or California, you’ll need to provide the username and password for your utility online account. This is not the same as the credentials for the Windmill app.
(Please note that your utility password won’t actually be shared with Windmill or any other party. Signing up just establishes a secure connection to your utility account using the common OAuth 2.0 standard--the same system used when you log into a third-party site with your Google or Facebook credentials.)

What is Windmill's Eco Rewards Program?
Earn cash while helping the planet and supporting energy conservation!
Windmill’s Eco Rewards Program is an environmentally conscious, first-of-its-kind program for window ACs. When it’s hot out, the program reduces stress on your local electrical grid, which helps lower pollution, decrease energy costs, as well as limit potential blackouts.
Sign up for Eco Rewards from the Windmill Air app in just 3 minutes! Here’s what to expect: a few times per summer when electricity use is especially high (i.e., when it’s hot out), Windmill will automatically adjust the setting of your AC(s) by changing the temperature slightly or briefly switching them to fan mode. Most people don’t notice any change, but this small step will help the environment, conserve power, keep your air clean…and earn you cash (paid for by utilities and energy markets)!
In terms of an actual Windmill Eco Rewards Event, here are some additional details:
- In almost all cases, we’ll notify you before each Event by email and/or in the app.
- Events usually take place on weekday afternoons and evenings May-September, and each Event will typically last 3-4 hours. On average, there will be 4-5 Events per summer.
- Your air conditioner(s) may turn to fan mode for up to 10 minutes at a time.
Note: you can opt out of the Event at any time.
Sit back and let your AC participate in Eco Rewards Events to earn Eco Rewards each year! Customers in New York can choose from:
- $60 per AC: Annual pack of activated carbon filters for cleaner air.
- $35 per AC: Windmill gift card for use on the site
- $10 per AC: Cash $$$
- Your AC must participate in a majority of Eco Rewards events in a given summer to be eligible (so try not to opt out)!
Thank you for helping the environment and the planet that we all call home! Stay breezy.
